Mineral Makeup... What's in Some That is Harming Our Skin?

I have been swayed the way of mineral makeup like many of us have for many reason's, one of which is the promise that it is much better for us as well as for our skin. For many of us with sensitive or acne prone skin we flock hoping that we will find a product that delivers the quality etc that we want without all the chemicals that irritate us.  We also love the luminescence that can be found in many mineral products giving sheen and glow to the skin. Imagine how disappointed I was when researching to find out that an ingredient in many mineral cosmetics (one which helps to give that 'glow') actually can cause skin problems!

Bismuth oxychloride is a natural ingredient found in a majority of mineral cosmetics. It is the main irritant in some brands of mineral cosmetics. Though a natural by-product, bismuth oxychloride often causes itching, rashes and mild to severe cystic acne. It is a by-product of copper and lead refining and it can be found on the periodic table too. Bismuth oxychloride resembles arsenic and antimony chemically. Cosmetically, bismuth oxychloride is considered a pearlizing agent used in many mineral foundations.

Well needless to say I will be reading a little more carefully the labels on mineral products before I purchase. The promises for a more natural product don't always been a better for you product so look into that brand before you purchase. Many companies now offer bismuth free mineral cosmetics, so if they don't state it ask!

@ Y - I wouldn't avoid minerals because of it. Just research your company before you purchase! Amazing what I have learnt since I started researching in detail the ingredients used! The shorter the list the better, and if you don't know what it is google it to find out!
